Crashing a 59 Chevy Bel Air into a 09 Chevy Malibu

It hurts to see a classic car getting smashed up but I must admit that when I see crash test videos, I have always wondered how an older car would hold up.

This video was done by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety to celebrate it’s 50th anniversary. They paired up a 1959 Chevrolet Bel Air and a 2009 Chevy Malibu.

If you’re thinking the Bel Air with its size and big chrome bumper will hold its own, get ready for a surprise.

Vintage Dragster Artwork

This is my latest artwork titled “Vintage Dragster“.

vintage-dragster-artwork

As far as doing artwork this one rates up there as one of the most challenging ones I have done.

What made this one different from the other illustrations was drawing in the details like the spoke wheels, the rail frame, and the exposed engine.

This dragster is owned by John Spradlin. John is no relation, but he does have the same name as my brother. John and I have been emailing back and forth for some time now. Sometimes I would get an email from him about his dragster and at first I would think, “When did my brother get a dragster?” then I would remember it’s from the other John.

Prints of are available in 16×24 size.

Redrawing The Illuminati Motor Works Logo

illuminati-logo

Josh Spradlin of Illuminati Motor Works contacted me recently about redrawing their logo. Illuminati Motor Works is an official contender of the Progressive Automotive X Prize.

Josh designed the logo and had painted it on the wall inside the garage. He needed to get the logo in electronic format so he could use it to get shirts printed or anything else he wanted to put the logo on.

The challenge about the logo was the 3-D overlapping triangle and circle. To get that effect I created the circle and triangle in separate layers. Then I duplicated each element twice per each side, cropping out the overlaying section.

I really enjoy looking at the Woodward Dream Cruise photo collections Autoblog.com puts together each year. In case you missed them, I created a list below.

The Best Configurator Of The Year

mustang-customizer-wide-format1

The new 2010 Mustang Customizer is out and it is one of the best configurators I have played with this year.

So what makes this configurator better than the others? First of all it has lots of options. Options for the car, options for the background and also options for different effects you can apply to the car like a burnout, dirt, and smoke.

The other nice thing is that it loads fast. Sometimes when configurators have as many options as this one, it will take forever to load.

The one little thing I think could have been done better is the parts side navigation. I kept having to chase down the “selected parts” link once the box resized itself. It would be great if it stayed the same size or either expanded just from the top down.

It also has nice share options so you show your friends what you created. Here is a link to one of the Mustangs I did. If you go and create one, come back and post it in the comments so I can check it out.

Garage Style Magazine

garage-style-magazine

In the 2009 summer edition of Garage Style Magazine, I am featured as one of the artists in the “UNIQUE Artists” section.

garage-style-magazine-article

This issue marks the one year anniversary for the magazine.

They feature outstanding examples of state-of-the-art garages as well as other type of garages and shops. They have an article on Roy Brizio’s South San Francisco shop in this issue.

One of the articles I enjoyed was about Corky Coker and how he started Coker Tire Company. They also have automobile reviews, book reviews, a buyer’s guide, and much more.

You can see an index of the current issue online along with a few sample PDFs for you to download.

I want to include a special thank you to Don Weberg the Editor-Publisher for asking me to be a part of this anniversary issue!!!

Thanks Don!!!!
